Sea Island Rotary of Beaufort, South Carolina, participated in the annual town’s Christmas parade. Our float entry was called “Light Up Rotary” after Rotary Pres Gary C.K. Huang’s presidential theme for 2014-15. We promoted our two fundraisers, “The Charity Shrimp Race” by having Jumbo the Shrimp (Stephanie Green) ride in Kathy Bundy’s white mustang convertible; and our “Hunting Island Adventure Biathlon” with a kayak being pulled behind Woody Oakley’s ‘53 Chev pickup. Several other members of our club passed out candy to the Christmas onlookers along the parade route. It was wonderful to watch the children’s faces light up as they received the candy, followed in almost every case by a sincere “thank you.”
Happy New Year and I am excited to announce that the Registration site for the 2014 District Conference is now available, you can register online on the District Database Calendar tab or you can register at the link provided for you in this email. The link is personalized for your registration only so do not forward to others. You can also register on a manual registration form which is also attached and available on the District Database as well.
The District Conference will be held in Charleston at the Charleston Marriott March 28, 29 and 30. It will be a celebration of our Clubs’ accomplishments in the 2013-14 Rotary year. We will recognize Clubs of the Year, outstanding Rotarians in many areas and present Presidential and Club Leadership Citations.
We will kick off the Conference on Friday at lunch and we have an exciting and hilarious motivational speaker scheduled. We will have a casual dinner Friday evening with the dress code being “Cruise Casual or Tacky Tourist” as we celebrate Cruising into Rotary’s Future.
Saturday evening will be black tie optional and we will recognize various key award winners and the Clubs of the year. Plenary sessions are scheduled for all three days and we will have a Silent Auction with all proceeds going to the effort to “End Polio Now”. There will also be a House of Friendship where your Clubs can show all that they have done during the year. We will also be doing a special District Service Project and details on that will be forthcoming soon.
We will have panel sessions featuring former Ambassadorial Scholars, Clubs and their Service Projects, Youth Exchange activities, District Grants and more.
A key feature of the Conference this year will be that we will be offering a single registration fee for the entire conference which includes all meals and an a la carte selection for those that may only be able to attend portions of the Conference.
Register early as the early bird registration price will expire March 10th. Come and enjoy the fellowship of all of our Rotarian families as we celebrate with one another.
Also attached to this email are four short videos of various aspects of Charleston, take a look and enjoy.

Dear Family and Friends,
As you may remember, in 2009, the Sea Island Rotary Club, of which I am a member, held its first-ever Beaufort Charity Shrimp Race fundraiser. The Race was a tremendous success and our Club was able to write a check for $10,000 to Polio Plus (Rotary Internationals effort to eradicate polio in the world). The last three years we had similar results and were able to support local and international children’s charities and make a substantial donation to the a Rotary international clean water fund, used to produce clean water wells one community at a time.
On October 5, 2013 we will hold our 5th Shrimp Race and the proceeds will again support local and international children’s charities.
The link below will give you more details on the race and how to “adopt” a shrimp with a chance to win cash prizes — $100 to $2,000 for the first 10 shrimp to cross the finish line, plus — this year — a chance to win $1,000,000! Our Club goal is again for 5,000 shrimp to be “adopted.” Shrimp can be adopted for just $10 through Paypal on the site below. Please consider adopting a shrimp (or two), and truly make a difference in the world. Plus, someone has to win those cash prizes … why not you!
Here is the link to adopt: rotaryshrimprace.com Please note me as the referral as all club members have a goal.
