Earlier this year the 2015 Annual Shrimp Festival held in October, had to be canceled because of dangerous weather including our SI Rotary Charity Shrimp Race

This past weekend Main Street Beaufort brought most of it back, ‘Christmas Holiday Style’. The Holiday Shrimp festival featured eight restaurants competing for the best shrimp dishes and vying for the Silver Cup, the Christmas Lights boat parade on the Beaufort River, the USMC band, and of the course beer and wine tents.

Sea Island Rotary had a booth set up to promote our Adventure Biathlon coming this March and the Charity Shrimp race coming next October. Here are some pictures:

(October 28, 2015, Beaufort SC): When he is not putting out fires as a firefighter and paramedic at the Savannah River Nuclear Site, Rotarian Joey Dunkle is fighting fires on the Beaufort County School Board. This civic-minded public servant joined Sea Island Rotary earlier this year and he has enjoyed making new friends and finding opportunities to serve his community through the club.

“I was looking for a way to get involved with my community and give back to it somehow,” Dunkle says. “I researched the various civic organizations in Beaufort and when I came across Sea Island Rotary I looked at the member list and I knew several of the members already.”

After meeting with Rotarian Carole Ingram, Joey attends his first meeting and was hooked. “I was welcomed by members, both the ones I knew and the ones I didn’t.” he reveals. “I was impressed by how the meetings were run efficiently. I also like that the club was not a secret society and was diverse in terms of sex and race.”

In the appeal of these things Joey is not alone among his fellow Sea Island Rotarians. The unique make-up of the club, the wide range of life and business experience and a down-home, upbeat hands-on approach to service and community involvement is a powerful driver for his fellow club members.

In 2014 Joey ran for and was elected to the Beaufort County School Board and represents his district of Port Royal. This hard working club member quickly got involved in Rotary activities and is a regular at the club’s weekly meetings.

Sea Island Rotary was recognized by the school board for their donation of $5,200.00 to provide school uniforms to Northern County elementary middle school students in need. School guidance counselors identify and order the uniforms through the Sea Island Rotary Club, which are then distributed confidentially to the children. The project will serve approximately 150 students in Beaufort County.

Michael Fleischbein recently called us to say that, Beaufort County School district has approved our donation, and would like to recognize SIRC, at their next meeting Oct 6th —so that program is off and running!

Sea Island Rotary distributed funds to four local Beaufort charities at our June 2 meeting. President Larry told club members that this is one of his favorite duties, as we share the proceeds of our fundraising efforts. The charities that received checks at this meeting include CAPA (Citizens Against Child Abuse), Thumbs Up (after-school tutoring for at-risk students), Port Royal Sound Foundation, and the YMCA.

Our program was by another charitable organization Dragon Boat Beaufort, which uses races between paddling teams to help raise funds for cancer patients and survivors. A great cause!

Last year Sea Island Rotary Club, along with others from District 7770, participated in a friendship exchange with several clubs from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, District 9370. We recently learned that the Kloof Rotary Club has been trying to find funds to install an addition at the Esibusisiweni Orphanage and Creche (pre-school). This facility is short on space and also needs a kitchen and toilets.

Because of this need and our relationship with the District 9370 Rotarians, Sea Island Rotary has allocated a portion of our charitable giving this year to this project.

Beaufort Middle School Principal and Sea Island Rotarian Carole Ingram shares this photo from the BMS student balloon launch. Sea Island Rotary Club sponsored this launch with a donation of funds. As you can tell, it was a tremendous success!  Carole thanks SIRC for our sponsorship and support of these students.
