Our featured speaker on November 11 was Paula Harper Bethea, director of the South Carolina Education Lottery. Ms. Bethea, who has served on many boards, commissions, and other public bodies, has brought a wealth of experience to the SC Education Lottery. She explained that the lottery has contributed over $3.4 billion to South Carolina education since its inception in 2002, divided among grades K-12, higher education programs and scholarships, and other community education programs. She emphasized that her agency is a resource for education and a fiscally conservative, socially aware business enterprise. Ms. Bethea’s lively speaking style and passion for education kept our Rotarians involved in the program, and left us with an appreciation of the large program she administers.

As recently announced, we have launched a new joint service project with the Lowcountry and Beaufort Rotary Clubs, called Outfitting Lowcountry’s Youth, a school uniform project.

This project is being headed-up by our very own Terri Ely, of Spectrum GAC, who will coordinate all uniform orders as they come from the various schools from the northern Beaufort clusters.  Each week she will place a mass uniform order from a couple pre- arranged discounted suppliers.  When the uniforms come in, we will need several Rotary volunteers to pick up the uniforms from Spectrum and deliver them to the various schools in our area.

Attached to this email is a list of all the schools participating in this service project.  We need YOU to volunteer to an assigned school(s) to be called upon for the deliveries.  The more volunteers the better, as we hope to have enough volunteers to rotate through the list so that no one is over burdened.

This project was jointly funded with $3,500 form the three Rotary Clubs.  This means on average each school has about $270 to spend on new uniforms this school year.  We should be able to help hundreds of our most needed families, and give their children the greatest chance to succeed in their early education.

If you can volunteer for this year long service project, please email me with your schools of choice, best contact number, and email address.

Yours in Rotary,

Mike Mashke,

Volunteer List for each School

YMCA.Big Check

The Sea Island Rotary Club recently donated $1,200 to the YMCA of Beaufort County in support of the Y’s summer camp and Learn-to-Swim programs.

“Generosity from organizations like the Sea Island Rotary Club goes very far here at the YMCA. Because of this donation, even more children will be able to attend summer camp and take part in vital swim programs. We are so appreciative,” YMCA of Beaufort County CEO Michael Bostwick said in a press release.

Beaufort County YMCA serves over 400 children ages 3-15 year old, as well as an additional 200 students within Jasper County, during the summer months. For more information on the programs, contact the YMCA at 843.522.9622 or visit
